Artist’s Statement

As the daughter of a Mexican mother and an Irish-American father, I’ve always worked to understand the tensions between discrete identities and the ambiguities that border them. The Texas-Mexico border is particularly important to me; it’s where much of my family lives, where I was raised during the summers by my Mexican grandmother, and where I lived for brief periods during my childhood and adolescence.

I make things: drawings, paintings, essays, pies. They all spring from the same well. The images I often return to are calaveras, nopales, agaves, sacred hearts, and flowers, drawn freehand in ink or painted in gouache. They are a celebration of my heritage and projections of who I am.
